Genealogical Jaunts!!
Stay in Ireland or Scotland; go back to London; tread your Ancestral paths in England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Europe, plan a stopover - the choice is yours! However, a suggested return date of 16 Aug has been reserved for you. [Hint- let Sally know your chosen return date as soon as you can!] [Hint - Sally & Jan can organise & book your further travel arrangements for your genealogical jaunt].
We arrive in SLC on Tues, might be in time to visit the Library and even start working if you wish.
Supermarket shopping.
Wednesday Jan will speak to you at THE LIBRARY! She will explain the layout of the British floor in good Kiwi language! She will suggest the first steps you should take, suitable to your research, when you walk through those elevator doors! We will just have a quiet day getting to know our way around the Library, listening to orientation lectures by Library staff and having lunch in the Staff Cafeteria
Sunday listen to the Mormon Choir, visit the Conference Center, have a 'pep' talk or go shopping.
The Library will close 5pm on Monday, so we may, if everyone feels like it, have dinner together and an earlyish night - perhaps the last for some weeks!
Salt Lake City is the home of the Family History Library - the world's largest genealogical library. Holding the equivalent of over 6,500,000 printed volumes! So there will be plenty to do.
On the following Sunday, we will have our wonderful sightseeing and shopping tour - visit the world famous Great Salt Lake, the Copper Mine, and Outlet Malls, shopping centres. A very full, exciting, eventful day!
You will be able to listen to the Mormon choir again on our last Sunday (though you can attend the rehearsals as often as you like through the week).
If there is a wish or need for extra optional shopping trips these can be arranged. Back to the Outlet Malls?
There are many restaurants & food outlets nearby & we are able to use the Church Office cafeteria. We also make regular visits to a supermarket to purchase items if you wish. $US10 a day is all that is required for food - but you can spend more!
The free concerts in Temple Square are a real joy!
One of the special things we do is to have Lectures (just for us) from the Library experts. This is our only chance to hear many of these speakers - though some travel the world giving lectures! There are 40 computers on our British Floor (and on three other floors too) - so lots of places to go to 'down-load' the IGI & to search Ancestral File etc. We usually have a class, where I show you how to 'work' the IGI and we look at web sites etc - and this is great. I also show you how to adjust the chairs in the Library for maximum comfort!
We leave Salt Lake City Tuesday & arrive in London Wednesday morning! Ready to research that afternoon!
Jet lag will be no excuse for not participating in the visits to repositories during the week!! We will just prop you up & wake you up as we travel on the tubes & buses to our destinations! Then Jan will guide us through TNA (PRO) Kew, Guildhall Library, London Metropolitan Archives, Society of Genealogists, Colindale Newspaper Library, Bishopgate Library, British Library etc - more or less as time permits!
Our accommodation in London is CENTRAL (saves time and tube fares!) Rooms are nicely furnished and new, fully self contained (even to a dishwasher) but not serviced. You will have to make your own bed and take out your own rubbish. Change from Salt Lake!
There will be some free time so that you may visit friends or relatives, your special family places or do 'touristy' things during this time. You will be given a ten day-one section London travel pass.
On Sat 26 Jul we fly to Edinburgh for 10 nights. Our accommodation will be most probably be in our usual B&B close to transport shops.
The Tour will finish Tue 5 Aug.
A return flight to NZ/Australia will be booked for 16 Aug. Just a suggested date - you may leave sooner or much later - your choice!
Then free to go on your own Genealogical Jaunts! Back to Top
You may stay longer in England and/or explore your ancestral paths around the UK or Europe. The choice is yours.
Jan will have already given you guidance as to how to choose where to go & for how long - that is if you want to do further research or 'tread ancestral paths'. You may wish to visit friends or relatives or take the NGP (see below!) where they wish to go!!!
Jan & Sally will make your bookings when you visit your 'ancestral abodes'. And help with a research plan.
If you wish to stopover during your return to NZ or make additional travel arrangements, just contact Sally for suggestions & costs. The sooner you plan your return journey, the better the chance of being on the flight of your choice.
Pre tour seminars will prepare you for this 'experience of a life time' so:
you obtain the maximum benefit from the tour
you are prepared prior to departure
you are familiar with the repositories
Seminars will be by video &/or in-person - depending on where tour members live. For those who cannot attend in Auckland, each seminar is videoed & the video & all course literature is sent to you. Newsletters, helpful forms, brochures, leaflets etc are included. Jan even aims to help you organise your research - a great benefit - before you leave, whilst you are there, & when you return.
Are you just beginning your Family History research? You will be guided through the early stages, so that you are sure to gain from your time in the Library.
Pre tour preparation is equivalent to taking night classes; attending numerous personal 'clinics'; listening to at least six lectures on specialised topics; attending travel seminars; plus lots more! Jan has designed special forms to help her to help you - so that your pre tour preparation time will be most effective & you know what you SHOULD do before you leave.
Jan Gow, one of New Zealand's most experienced genealogists & New Zealand's most experienced genealogical tour guide, will lead the tour. Jan has been owner/manager of Beehive Books (NZ's only supplier of genealogical books, maps, computer programs etc) since 1987.. A past president of the NZ Society of Genealogists, & a local, national & international speaker & veteran of overseas research trips. Jan, a Family History research tutor since 1985, is eminently suited to guide you through your research - before you leave & whilst away. Jan's first Tour to Salt Lake City was in 1992. New Zealand's NetGuide magazine, has Jan's column each month - Genealogy on the Net - and there is usually a one or two part article each year or two written by Jan.
Just something we have to accept! However, if they are 'hooked on computers' they could have a wonderful time! They can be guided to 'download' for you, or, search Indexes in FamilySearch. There are fabulous computer stores in SLC. Not computer literate? Many interesting places to visit (even a day trip to a gambling place!!). Buses and the Trax (train) in the central city are free & there are lots of places to visit within walking distance.
It could be best to have your NGP join you in England. As always, you are free to participate as you wish. So, if you or your NGP do not wish to visit repositories - that is fine.
See Registration Form
NOTE
The Tour Price will be based on current exchange rates, costs & air fares & a minimum number of people. Accordingly, the Tour Price may be subject to change. We shall, however, do all in our power to maintain the published price.
